El Mozo El Cosmonauta y el Viaje En El Tiempo
El Mozo is a family project founded more than forty years ago in the village of Lanciego in Rioja Alavesa (part of the Rioja appellation but politically part of Spain’s Basque country). Husband and wife team Itxaso Compañon and Gork Mauleón respect every inch of their 9 hectares of vines- spread over eighteen small plots with variations in altitude and soil- bequeathed by their parents and grandparents around Lanciego. They are pushing the boundaries of Rioja, respecting local wine-making traditions like carbonic maceration, while making stunning, fruit forward, joyous bottles of wine.
This wine is a blend of both red and white grapes: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura, Malvasia and Torrontes (60% red varieties, 40% white). The grapes are all sourced from their organic Monte Viñaspre vineyard, which was planted by the winemaker’s grandfather in the 1940s. The age of the vines are approximately 80 years old and vineyard altitude reaches 614 metres above sea level. The vineyard soil is chalky, with iron-rich clay and marl. White and red varieties are harvested the same day by hand. Grapes are fermented together with the stems, in a semi-carbonic maceration. A light pressing ensures a traditional ‘Riojan clarete tone’ somewhere between a rosé and a red. Wild malolactic fermentation is allowed to occur in tank. No clarification or filtering.
Intense red and black fruit combine with a luscious mouth feel, complimenting an underlying smokiness. With very fine tannins, the finish is long, with lovely floral and balsamic notes.
El Mozo is a family project going back more than forty years in Rioja Alavesa, a curious region being within the Rioja wine area but outside the autonomous province of La Rioja, and actually therefore part of the Basque country. Itxaso Compañon and Gorka Mauleón work with and respect deeply every inch of the nine hectares of organic vineyards - spread over eighteen small plots all with variations in altitude and soils - bequeathed by their parents and grandparents in the town of Lanciego. They are really pushing the boundaries of what we expect from Rioja, including carbonic maceration and no added sulphites, making stunning, fruit-forward, joyous bottles of wine.
